Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) careers will always be in high demand. Sadly, even with the many career opportunities in these fields, women and African Americans are grossly underrepresented. Studies have attributed a lack of participation in math and science to a host of barriers, mainly rooted in lack of education. To spark an interest in these careers, minority youth must be exposed to the tasks associated with them at an early age. This exposure must then be facilitated by ensuring students see other minorities represented in those fields, so they can imagine themselves in that position in the future.

The purpose of the Sweetwater Blossom Foundation S.T.E.M. Program is to introduce S.T.E.M. to adolescents and their caretakers. We do this by traveling to underrepresented and poorly resourced youth-and-perform workshops. In these workshops, we invite fun learning environments. Our S.T.E.M. program is designed to not only display the tasks of math and science careers, but also encourage dialog about the possibilities and limitations concerning at-risk youths with regards to these careers. As an invaluable resource, the Sweetwater Blossom Foundation acts as a catalyst to paving a positive, fruitful and fulfilling career path through S.T.E.M. Recently, we introduced S.T.E.A.M (A for the arts) to expand our reach and accommodate a variety of career interests. With the support of the community, The Sweetwater Blossom Foundation is here to stay and meet the needs of our youth.
